NATO and Intersectional Perspectives: Understanding How Disinformation Targets Women and Other Vulnerable Groups
An event organised by Sigma European Think Tank with the support of NATO’s Public Diplomacy Division, held on October 21st, 2022, in Brussels, at the Press Club.
The effects of disinformation are far-reaching and directly erode the foundations of our capabilities for collective security, political action, and effective strategic leadership. Disinformation relates to the most vulnerable or marginalised groups and the effective weaponisation of information against them. Experts and contributors from both NATO and civil society across Europe note that gender and intersectional perspectives are both extremely important and relatively under-explored in the field of countering disinformation.
The working group offered inclusive and multidisciplinary approaches in addressing core issues, in particular: what is gender-based disinformation; what is the role of the online space in amplifying gender-based disinformation targeting vulnerable groups; what can we learn from cases of online disinformation campaigns, and what impact and solutions can we explore in this field.
